FAQ

Questions worth asking first

Does it need the internet?

Only your wifi. SigBuddy reads your Sigenergy system directly on your local network, so when your broadband drops out the display carries on as normal. Nothing about your generation or usage is sent anywhere.

What if my Sigenergy is on a totally different network?

SigBuddy finds your system by itself when they share a network. If yours is on a different one, you can enter the Sigenergy's IP address by hand instead, and it will talk to it across networks as long as there's a path between them.

In the rare case where that isn't possible, a special firmware can be arranged. If you're at all unsure whether your setup will work, please get in touch at contact@sigbuddy.com before you buy.

What if I don't have a battery?

Say no to the battery question during setup and the battery is left out of the diagram completely — you get a solar, grid and house layout drawn for your system. You can change the answer later by resetting it.

Will it work with my inverter if it isn't Sigenergy?

No. SigBuddy speaks to Sigenergy systems specifically. If you have something else, this isn't the product for you and we'd rather say so before you buy it.

My solar isn't all through the Sigenergy — does AC-coupled work?

Yes, as long as your Sigenergy system can see the other inverter. Where an installer has added a Sigenergy battery alongside solar that was already on the roof, the older inverter usually stays where it is and is measured by the Sigenergy, often with a SigenSensor. If your mySigen app shows your solar split into Sig and EXT, SigBuddy can see both too.

The big solar number stays the total, so it's all the solar on the house, not just the part wired through the battery. On the 4.3-inch and 5-inch displays, the split appears underneath it: SIG for the panels on your Sigenergy inverter and EXT for the other one.

SOLAR 3.5kW SIG 2.1 kW EXT 1.4 kW BATTERY 96% IN 1.3 kW GRID 1.3kW EXPORT HOUSE 0.9kW
How it looks with a second inverter

There's nothing to switch on. The split appears by itself about a minute after your other inverter first produces power, and stays from then on. Homes without a second inverter just see the single total.

One thing worth knowing: if your older array was never wired into the Sigenergy at all, nothing can see it — not the display, and not the mySigen app either.

Does it show my EV charger?

Yes, for Sigenergy chargers, from firmware 4.0.0. The car gets its own place on the screen with its power and whether it's charging. On the 4.3- and 5-inch, a DC charger also shows the car's battery percentage and V2X. See what it shows.

Choose your charger in the display's settings. A car that is plugged in but not drawing power doesn't show. Other brands of charger are counted in the house figure.

What does it show in a power cut?

If your Sigenergy system has backup and drops off the grid, the grid figure goes to zero and a flashing OFF GRID appears under it, so you can see from across the room that you're on your own power. It stops flashing when the grid comes back.

Can I put more than one in the house?

Yes, they're independent — each one reads the system on its own. A common pairing is the 4.3-inch in the kitchen and a 2.8-inch on a desk.

Do I have to mount it?

No. All three stand on a shelf or bench as they come. Power is a USB-C cable, so it goes wherever you have a socket.

What if my wifi password changes?

It depends which size you have. On the 4.3-inch and the 5-inch, tap the gear and choose Change wi-fi — it restarts, asks for a network, and keeps everything it already knows about your solar system. The 2.8-inch has no touchscreen, so it's a full reset: hold the BOOT button on the back until the screen counts down from five and let go. That clears your answers about the site along with the wifi, so you'll fill those in again.

How do I update the software?

From your phone or computer, over your own wifi. Each display has its own small web page. Open it in a browser on the same network, and it checks sigbuddy.com for a newer version. If there is one, tap Download and install. The display restarts on the new version about twenty seconds later.

Your phone does the downloading and passes the update to the display, so the display itself never connects to the internet. Your wifi, settings and solar system details are kept.

Updates only happen when you choose. Nothing installs itself overnight. If a new version ever fails to start properly, the display goes back to the one it was running before.

To find the page, type the display's address into your browser. On the 4.3-inch and 5-inch, it's under This display on the settings screen.

On the 2.8-inch, press and hold the BOOT button, as you would for a factory reset. After a second a countdown appears, with the display's address in small text at the bottom. Note it down and let go of BOOT before the countdown finishes. Letting go cancels the reset and nothing is changed. If you hold it until the end, the display is wiped and has to be set up again.

If your display's page doesn't offer the update button, it came with earlier software. Email us and we'll send you the file to install from that same page.
